Sectors
Economists categorize the kinds of work people do into groups called sectors.

Types of Sectors:
There are 4 main sectors:

1. Primary Sector
- Work in the primary sector involves harvesting or extracting natural resources.
- Some examples include farming, forestry, and mining
- Some jobs in this sector include fisherpersons, farmers, loggers and miners.

2. Secondary Sector
- Work in the secondary sector is mostly construction or manufacturing
- Construction involves building things such as a homes, office towers and bridges
- In manufacturing raw materials are changed into useful products. Example: fish is processed and packaged, trees are changed into paper and other things, potatoes are processed into fries and chips, and minerals are processed into jewelry.

3. Tertiary Sector
- In this sector people provide services to others
- Examples include: salespeople, bus drivers, medical professionals, actors, teachers, government workers, taxi drivers and lawyers.
- This sector also includes utility companies, such as electricity and telephone companies.

4. Quaternary Sector
- This sector is the most recent to develop
- It involves working with ideas and information
- It deals with new and innovative technologies
- Some jobs in this sector include working in laboratories to research new ideas and create new products.
- Computer programmers, system analysts, computer operators fall into these categories
- The building of trains, automobiles, computers and drilling platforms used in drilling for oil fall under this category because of the new technologies being used.

4. Being able to gather, hunt and fish over large areas was important to First Nations people because their economy was based on natural resources. During the summer they stayed close to the shore for fishing and gathering of berries. In the winter they moved inland to find trees and wood to build houses and to hunt.

5. The purpose of the map on page 26-27 of my textbook is to show where the First nations lived and what they depended on for their needs and wants at time of contact or when the Europeans arrived.

6. Three resources that the First nations depended on for survival would depend on the region they lived in. In the far north Inuit needed snow and sod to build their homes. They used the caribou for food, to make tools and clothing. They also used seals for meat and their hides for shelter, clothing and foot-ware.

7. First Nations people needed to be able to use resources in efficient ways because they had only limited resources available to them, in their region. All their needs and wants were fulfilled by nature. Therefore, efficient use of these resources was important to ensure they would be there for future generations to use.

8. Three reasons why the Europeans decided to leave their homeland are as follows:
• They wanted more land
• To spread their religion
• Looking for natural resources
• Economic opportunities

9. The First Nations and Europeans traded goods for economic reasons. The newcomers or Europeans were very interested in getting furs, and the First Nations peoples were interested in trading goods such as metal knives and pots. There were economic benefits to both groups.
10. Two problems that were created with the development of the fur trade were: First, First Nations people started to spend more time trapping and hunting fur bearing animals and became more dependent on the Europeans for goods needed. Then when the population of fur bearing animals became depleted the Europeans moved to another area. By then the First Nations people were too dependent on them for goods. As a result they could not meet all their needs. These were not problems that were easily solved because it was impossible to go back to their old ways with so much European settlement.
11. A treaty is an agreement between two or more nations. The European and First nations felt they needed treaties to help them get along in the future. The Europeans ( British)felt they would keep the First Nations loyal to them in any future conflicts with France. The First Nations felt they would help keep peace and ensure they could maintain their way

Socials (model answers for 1-11 chapter 2)-these were corrected in class.
1. In a pre-industrial economy First Nations people produced goods on farms or by hunting. They used simple tools operated by humans, animals, water or wind power.
These needs and wants were distributed by sharing, trading and by buying and selling.

2. In an industrial economy goods were manufactured in large factories using mechanical tools such as steam and gas engines. They were distributed mostly by buying and selling.
In a post-industrial economy goods are still manufactured by large and small businesses. There is also an information market using the internet. Goods in this type of economy are distributed by buying and selling.

3. The First Nations people thought the same way when it came to use of the land and natural resources. They felt the land was there for their use but they must respect it.Thet used the resources available to them in their region for food and other wants. For example the caribou was used for meat, to make tools and clothing. Nothing was wasted.
